Although dental aesthetics are influenced by several factors, tooth discolouration is considered the most significant factor behind the patient’s dissatisfaction with their dental appearance. There are several endodontic materials that can put teeth at risk of discolouration -these include pulp capping materials, root canal irrigants, medicaments, root filling materials and cements. Antibiotic-corticosteroid based medicaments are useful aids during endodontic treatment, especially when there is inflammation of the pulp and/or peri-radicular tissues – such as pulpitis, internal and external inflammatory root resorption, apical periodontitis and/or neuropathic pain. The therapeutic effects of these medicaments are mainly a result of the corticosteroid component. The antibiotic component also poses several advantages. When this antibiotic is a tetracycline, the risk of tooth discolouration may increase. However, the degree of discolouration has been controversial with various proponents of commercial medicament pastes claiming superiority of their paste over others. In this lecture, the latest research will be discussed regarding the discolouration potential together with the mechanisms and minimising strategies and techniques to consider using if discolouration occurs.
